Summer is the most popular time of year to complete a relocation, but if your move falls on a scorching summer day, it’s important to find ways to stay cool and safe.
Courtesy Moving and Storage has more than 100 years of combined industry experience, so we know a thing or two about beating the heat. Here are some of our best tips for staying cool on moving day:
Top Warm Weather Moving Day Tips
Whether you’re moving in town or completing a long-distance move, following these simple tips will keep you, your family, and your movers more comfortable.
Comfortable Clothing that Protects You from the Sun
Did you ever try to unpack while dealing with a painful sunburn? It’s no fun, so avoid that fate by wearing breathable clothing that covers you enough to provide sun protection.
You’ll also want to forego the sandals for sturdy closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from dropped items and other moving-day hazards.
Stay Hydrated
One of the most common causes of hot weather distress is failing to stay properly hydrated. Make sure to have plenty of bottled water on hand for yourself and for any professional movers that you hire.
Make Other Plans for Pets and Kids
Having pets and small kids underfoot on moving day is never ideal, but on a hot day, it can be dangerous. Pets are particularly prone to hot-weather distress, so protect them by sending them to doggy daycare or to a friend’s house on moving day where they can be in climate-controlled comfort.
It’s also a good idea to have small children spend the day with a friend or neighbor.
Keeping the Indoors Comfortable
The door to your home will be opened and closed a lot on moving day, so consider bumping down the temperature on the AC to keep the home cooler. Running fans throughout the house can also help.
In order to ensure you won’t be left without electricity (and therefore without AC) at your new or existing home, schedule for the electricity to be turned off the day after you move out and the day before you move in.
Make Sure Your Vehicle is in Good Working Order
If you’re completing a long-distance move, have your vehicle serviced shortly before moving day. Make sure they check the AC, so you won’t be left without it on a long drive.
Don’t Push Your Limits
It’s important to stick to your schedule, but it’s more important to not overexert yourself. Take frequent breaks to rest and drink some water. If you think moving on your own on a hot day will be difficult for you, hire professional movers to do the heavy lifting.
