If you’re gearing up for a move to Monterey County, you’ve probably already done some research about what you can expect after your Salinas movers have unloaded all of your belongings. Once you get settled in, you’ll have a plethora of sights to see and places to check out—some you may not have heard about yet. So once you’ve gotten moved into your new home in Monterey County, bid your Salinas moving company adieu and head out on the town to explore these five great attractions.
1) Pinnacles National Park
This is America’s newest national park, having been designated in just 2013. It’s home to astonishing rock formations, caves, and spires—all the remnants of an ancient volcanic eruption. There are more than 30 miles of trails, perfect for hiking enthusiasts, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a California condor.
2) The Salinas Valley
Ask any moving company in Salinas what they hear about on a regular basis when talking to others about the area, and they’ll likely tell you about the Salinas Valley. Stretching across 90 miles of land, it’s prime growing land for the area’s award winning wineries, not to mention a large amount of the world’s produce. Much of America’s leafy greens come from here, which makes the nickname “America’s Salad Bowl” all too appropriate. Visit a working farm along the valley, or one of the 29 wineries along the River Road Wine Trail.
3) Steinbeck Country
Another famous Salinas-born legend is Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. Embark on the self-guided Steinbeck Itinerary here, or take a three-day trip to tour his favorite haunts and the prominent locations from his books. This might be a niche stop for only the truest literary nerds, but it’s sure to be an enjoyable travel.
4) Monterey Zoo and Vision Safari Bed & Breakfast
This nonprofit zoo is a haven for retired circus stars like elephants, bears, tigers, lions, and more. Eight luxury bungalows provide the perfect lodging for animal lovers, and daily guided tours are great for the whole family. Join up with the Walk with the Animals program for meeting and interacting with the animals. The tour includes breakfast and lunch, plus wine and cheese in the evening.
5) Elkhorn Slough Natural Estuarine Research Reserve at Moss Landing
Head outdoors for adventure, wildlife sightings and more fun in this, one of California’s largest tidal saltmarsh wetlands. Guided pontoon boat cruises are available as are rental kayaks and canoes for exploring on your own. You can expect to see hundreds of species of birds, sea lions, seals, and sea otters. Moss Landing is also home to great artists’ studios, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants.
